Republican Temple

Republican Temple

The most significant monument of the Ariccian acropolis consists of the base slab and part of the podium of a magnificent three-cell republican temple. The temple faced the valley and was visible from the Tyrrhenian Sea, thus showing the high status of the city. The masonry is in opus quadratum with alternate courses of blocks arranged as headers and stretchers. The remaining structures are located in Saint Nicholas Square, at the municipal headquarters, and span under the road surface as well. Archaeologists suggested they could be the ruins of a Capitolium, or of the temples of Juno or Jupiter mentioned by classic sources.
